STATE Quarters: Shawnee Heighs for a trip to the Final 4
Game 18: (17-1)
21 May vs. Shawnee Heights at Saint Thomas Aquinas at 7:00 (8-0-0)
And yes this was a state quarterfinal, but this was no contest, and that seemed to be the theme of all the state quarterfinals in 5A—at least in the East.
Saints 8 Shawnee Heights 0
BVSW 7 Seamen 0
Maize South 2 Andover 0
Carroll 5 Andover Central 1
The girls arrived focused and full of energy tonight. The seniors made their last game ever at Saint Thomas Aquinas one to be proud of. Our passing was crisp tonight and the defense was the defense. Andi and Jane switched a bit in the second half, but that door to the goal stayed shut.
I am unsure if the defense and Maggie Payne fully know what is going on within their joint effort this season, but let's just say, it's historic!
1. Amanda McMurry (1995) | .380 |
2. Amanda McMurry (1994) | .390 |
3. Allyiah Calvert (2016) | .396 |
4. Hannah Koesterer (2005) | .410 |
5. Payne (2022) | .440 |
Maggie Payne currently stands at .349 goals against. .349 goals a match.
But going forward we will play two of our most difficult matches of the year, but this historic defense will have a lot to do with how this final four will go. We beat Bishop Carroll in our toughest match of the year, 3-2 in overtime earlier this season. And Maggie had to save two PKs in the second half to get us to overtime.
And Southwest was a 2-1 match shortly after that one. So of the six goals our defense has given up all year, these two upcoming teams have scored half of them against us.
This should be quite a weekend, and quite a challenge to bring home the girls' soccer's 20th State Title and their 4th in a row.
Our Final Four will begin Friday night at 6:30 against Bishop Carroll at Spring Hill.
